What Subjects Do You Need to Study Drama?

If you want to study drama then you will be aware that drama schools are some of the hardest to get into.

But this is generally because of the limited amount of spaces that every school has rather than the subjects that you need to have to qualify for the course.

Generally speaking, colleges and universities want their students to be well-rounded, and this is especially important when it comes to studying drama.

A lot of high schools do not offer drama specific qualifications, and so entry requirements for courses in colleges have to be a lot more lenient.

For most drama courses, the main thing that colleges look for is a qualification in English and the English proficiency that you have.

The English proficiency test is more targeted to International students from countries where English is not their native language as a big part of drama is speaking and in the USA this is predominantly done in English.

Other than this, drama schools tend to look at the person who is applying for a place, rather than the qualifications that they have. So, if you are passionate about drama then drama school is a great place to start.

What qualifications do I need for drama school?

If you are in the USA, then you will get your high school diploma upon graduation. A good result in this qualification alone could be enough to get you a place in drama school.

However, it is also worth remembering that drama schools focus on the person who is applying more so than the qualifications that that person has.

If you are applying for drama school from outside the USA then different qualifications will be expected from potential applicants. For example, if you are applying for a place in a US college, but are a UK resident, then you will usually need 5 GCSE qualifications in grade A-C. However, qualifications are not all that you will need to get into drama school.

The biggest part of getting into drama school is the casting call that you must complete. It is possible for someone to have all the necessary qualifications for drama school, but still not be a good fit for the course.

This is why you have to complete a casting call or interview as part of the application process for most universities. This call will allow the school to see if you will be a good fit, and they can offer a place if you are.

How many years does it take to study drama?

It usually takes 3-4 years to study drama. The majority of drama qualifications take place at undergraduate level, and all undergraduate courses generally take about this time to complete. This is when they are studied full time, so if you choose to study part-time instead then you should expect this to take longer.

However, this is just the time that it takes to study the official qualifications for drama. But if you are passionate about this then it is likely that you will spend much longer studying this. In fact, some of the most successful actors of today started studying drama and acting from when they were very small children.

So in terms of formal qualifications, it will usually take 3-4 years to study drama. However, the actual practice of studying drama will begin as soon as you find that passion.

Once you have found this, then you will be studying drama for the rest of your life, even if you do not get any formal qualifications in this type of study.

What skills do you need for drama?

Some of the skills that you will need to be successful in drama include physical skills such as movement, body language, and coordination.

Additionally, you will need to develop skills for your facial expression, spatial awareness, and interaction with others who you are on stage with. Depending on the type of drama roles that you want to go into, you might also need to develop skills in singing and dance.

Drama is something that can not simply be defined by formal qualifications. As well as these, there are a whole range of skills that you will need to develop and work on if you want to work in the drama industry.

These skills range from body skills through to expression, and even singing ability. After all, to work in the drama industry you have to be very well-rounded, so it is only understandable that you need a range of skills to be successful.

Of course, not all of these skills will be needed for every job that you complete. However, it is good to develop them all if you want to be successful as it is best to prepare for all possible opportunities and roles.
